Anonymous Donor's Generosity Pays Off Sumatanga Retreat Center Debt
Prayers continue to be answered in Camp Sumatanga’s return to financial stability. An anonymous donor has generously paid off Camp’s approximately $722,000 remaining debt from the construction of the Retreat Center. A major burden that Camp has struggled with for years has been eliminated! As a result of this payment Sumatanga will have nearly $80,000 each year in extra funds available for ongoing operations of Camp instead of for making loan payments. What a wonderful gift!
Receiving this gift comes in the same week that the Save Sumatanga effort has gone over the half a million dollar mark. Since Executive Director Bob Murray’s address at Annual Conference in early June, the response from Conference members has been outstanding. Camp has now received more than $1.2 million in donations!
In addition to the monetary donations, a number of individuals and groups have offered substantial amounts of their time as volunteers to refurbish and update Camp’s facilities. Thus far, volunteers have built decks on the front of every cabin and have painted many of the cabins in Pool Camp. Volunteers will soon be replacing the acoustical tiles in Hutto Auditorium, Green Auditorium and Hundley Dining Hall. Volunteers are currently scheduled to begin work on replacing the roof on the classrooms and to completely renovate the bathrooms in the cabins in Pool Camp.
Reservations for overnight accommodations are up substantially since Annual Conference, though space is still generally available except for weekends in October.
The Trustees and Staff of Sumatanga Camp and Conference Center express their deep appreciation to the anonymous donor for this amazing gift.
