Volunteers and Staff

Serving at Sumatanga Camp & Conference Center

There are many opportunities for you to live out your call to service at Sumatanga. Our summer camping programs are facilitated by both volunteer and paid staff.

Volunteers

Every year, hundreds of volunteers give their time and talents to the summer camping program at Sumatanga. They are truly a blessing to our program.

Each camp has a Volunteer Director Team. This team is usually made up of both laity and clergy volunteers. In addition to program planning, the directors are responsible for recruiting volunteers for their teams to serve as Assistant Directors and Counselors. For more information about these positions, click here.

In accordance with our Safe Sanctuary Policy, the following age requirements must be met for volunteers working with children and youth:

  • Volunteers leading a group of children or youth should be eighteen (18) years of age or older.
  • Volunteers should be at least five (5) years older than the age group with whom they are to work.
  • Special consideration (i.e. Counselor-in-Training) is given to persons wishing to volunteer that do not meet the age requirements listed above at the discretion of the Director of Programs and the volunteer director teams of a specific camp.

Interviews, reference surveys and background checks are mandatory for all applicants. Volunteers are expected to participate in the pre-camp training sessions on Saturday prior to each camp week. Volunteers meeting all requirements for service are accepted to a specific camp at the discretion of the Director of Programs and the Director Team of the camp for which they have applied.

If you would like to volunteer, whether you have been recruited by a director team or not, we would love to talk to you!

Summer Camping Staff Positions

In addition to our volunteer staff, we have a variety of paid staff positions available for the entire camp season. This staff begins their summer with a MANDATORY training week and serves in their respective positions for the entire camp season. Compensation is job specific and includes housing for the camp weeks assigned and food while on-site. Positions are exempt and not subject to the hours of work and overtime payment provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Interviews, reference surveys and background checks are mandatory for all applicants. The same age requirements must be met for paid staff as outlined for volunteers, with the exception of our SumaCrew. Specific requirements are outlined in the staff job descriptions.

Camp Photos

Camp Sumatanga is awesome! They provide a helpful learning experience about God.  Not only do they focus on godly things, but we have lots of fun! The meetings we had with our groups helped us to get closer to one another and talk about our experiences. That small portion out of the day was my favorite.

My valuable time at Camp Sumatanga taught me that different races can come together and worship one God. Being at camp has taught me to be like Jesus.   I learned how to turn the other cheek when someone is trying to make you fight them.   My time at Sumatanga taught me how to be helpful to others.

When I went to Camp Sumatanga I ate, played, slept, went to the lake, swam, and canoed!
Camp is important to me because it helps me understand Jesus.
